Why am I seeing the error "Can't Display Chart: queries without a topic specified are restricted"

For Non-Admins:

If you are seeing this error, your user account likely has the Restricted Querier or Viewer role, which restrict access to pre-defined Topics in Omni, and the query in question was built outside of one of these. You will need the help of an admin or the content owner to resolve this issue.

For Admins & Content Owners:

If one of your Restricted Queriers / Viewers is seeing this error, the query in question has been built outside of a topic or in SQL.

Options to resolve:

  • Move the query to a topic defined in the shared model. If the query is built in All Views & Fields you can easily swap into an existing topic. Note that if you create a new topic for the query, you will also need to promote that to the shared model, as workbook-level changes are restricted by default for these user types.
  • Enable Access Boost: If you want users to be able to view a dashboard with content built outside of Topics, an Admin can enable AccessBoost on that dashboard if it is enabled on your environment. This means that the dashboard will ignore users’ database connection roles, in effect overriding their usual Permission level to enable access to a specific dashboard. You can read more about how to enable AccessBoost in our docs here.
